Passport Validity Rules: 3 Months vs 6 Months Every Indian Traveler Must Know
Saudi Jawazat says 3 months for Arab countries, 6 months for others. Get this wrong and you will be denied boarding. Here is the exact rule with a comparison chart.
If your passport is expiring soon and you are planning to travel from Saudi Arabia — or traveling TO Saudi Arabia — the validity rules can be confusing. Some countries require 6 months, others require 3 months. Get it wrong and you will be denied boarding at the airport.
The Saudi General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat) has confirmed the exact rules. Here is what every Indian expat needs to know.
The official rule (from Jawazat)
According to the Saudi General Directorate of Passports (SPA, 2025):
- Travel to Arab countries: Passport must have at least 3 months validity remaining
- Travel to all other countries: Passport must have at least 6 months validity remaining
This applies to Saudi citizens and residents — including Indian expats holding iqama.

Important: The 3-month rule is for Saudi residents traveling FROM Saudi Arabia. If you are traveling TO Saudi Arabia, the Saudi immigration rule is different — Saudi entry requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry (MOFA guidelines).
Why this matters for Indian expats
Scenario 1: Flying from Saudi to India
Your passport must have 6 months validity from your date of departure. If your passport expires on 15 January 2027, you cannot book a flight departing after 15 July 2026.
Scenario 2: Flying from Saudi to UAE (weekend trip)
Your passport must have 3 months validity from your date of departure. More relaxed, but still checked at the airport.
Scenario 3: Family visiting you in Saudi Arabia
Your family member’s passport must have 6 months validity from their entry date into Saudi Arabia. If they arrive on 1 August 2026, their passport must be valid until at least 1 February 2027.
Scenario 4: Renewing iqama with expiring passport
If your passport expires before your iqama renewal date, you must renew your passport first. The Jawazat will not renew an iqama for a passport with less than 3 months validity.
What happens if your passport has less validity?
Airlines are required to check passport validity before boarding. If your passport has less than the required validity:
- You will be denied boarding at the check-in counter
- No airline will make exceptions — it is a government rule, not an airline policy
- You cannot blame the airline — they are legally required to enforce this
- Travel insurance may not cover incidents related to travel on an invalid passport
How to check your passport expiry date
Your Indian passport expiry date is printed on the last page. It is usually in the format DD/MM/YYYY or DD-MMM-YYYY.
Quick calculation: Add 6 months to your departure date. If your passport expiry is before that date, you need to renew.
Example: Departing Saudi on 15 August 2026 → Passport must be valid until at least 15 February 2027.
How to renew your Indian passport in Saudi Arabia
Indian passports can be renewed at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh or the Indian Consulate in Jeddah. The process:
- Book an appointment through the Indian Embassy portal
- Submit old passport, application form, photos, and iqama copy
- Processing takes 2-4 weeks
- New passport is collected in person or mailed

Special case: Umrah visa passport requirement
For Umrah visa applications through Nusuk, your passport must have at least 6 months validity from the intended entry date. This is stricter than the general travel rule.
