What is an Iqama?
The Iqama (also called Muqeem card) is the Saudi residency permit issued to all expatriate workers. It serves as your legal ID in the Kingdom — you must carry it at all times. Your iqama contains:
- Your name (in Arabic and English)
- Iqama number (your unique identifier)
- Sponsor (kafeel) name and number
- Profession
- Expiry date
- Photo
Key fact: Your iqama is tied to your employer (sponsor/kafeel). You cannot work for another employer without your sponsor’s permission or a formal sponsorship transfer (naqal kafala).
Iqama Expiry Date — How to Check
Your iqama expiry date determines how long you can legally stay in Saudi Arabia. If it expires, you face fines and potential huroob status.
4 ways to check your iqama expiry:
- Absher Portal — Log in to absher.sa → Individual Services → Query Iqama Expiry
- Absher App — Open the app → Services → Iqama Expiry
- Muqeem Portal — Visit muqeem.sa and enter your iqama number
- Without Absher — Use the Ministry of Labor website (mol.gov.sa)

Iqama Color Status — What It Matters
Your iqama has a color status based on your employer’s Nitaqat (Saudization) compliance. The color affects your ability to change jobs, renew visas, and travel.
| Color | Meaning | Can You Change Jobs? |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Company is compliant | Yes, with restrictions |
| Yellow | Company is partially compliant | Limited options |
| Red | Company is non-compliant | You may request transfer |
| Platinum | Company is highly compliant | Full mobility |

Digital Iqamah — Your Mobile ID
Since 2021, Saudi Arabia offers a digital version of your iqama through the Absher app. The Digital Iqamah (Muqeem Digital ID) includes a unique QR code and works offline once downloaded.
Why it matters:
- No fine for not carrying the plastic card
- Works without internet (download once)
- Accepted by police and government offices

Huroob Status — Check and Remove
Huroob (absconding) is the most serious status issue an expat can face. It means your employer or the government has reported you as absent from work or in violation of residency rules.
Common reasons for huroob:
- Absent from work for an extended period
- Not returning to Saudi Arabia on an exit re-entry visa
- Employer reporting you as absconded
How to check: Use the Absher portal or visit your nearest Jawazat office.
