How to Check if You Have Huroob (Absconding) Status on Your Iqama

If you have been absent from work, changed employers without completing paperwork, or stayed outside Saudi Arabia too long on an exit re-entry visa — your employer may have filed a huroob (absconding) report against you.

Huroob is one of the most serious issues an expat can face in Saudi Arabia. It affects your iqama status, your ability to travel, and your chances of getting future employment. Here is how to check your status and what to do about it.

What is Huroob?

Huroob (هروب) means “absconding” — it is when an employer reports to the Ministry of Interior that their employee has:

1. Left work without permission and has been absent for a significant period
2. Failed to return to Saudi Arabia after an exit re-entry visa expired
3. Violated the terms of their employment contract

Once filed, the worker’s iqama is flagged in the system. This has serious consequences.

Consequences of Huroob status

• Cannot renew iqama — your iqama will expire and you cannot renew it
• Cannot transfer to new employer — the Qiwa transfer is blocked
• Cannot leave Saudi Arabia legally — airport immigration will stop you
• Cannot access most government services — Absher, banking, mobile SIM are affected
• Potential deportation — if caught, you may be detained and deported
• Re-entry ban — may prevent you from returning to Saudi Arabia in the future

How to check your Huroob status

Method 1: Absher (fastest)

1. Log in to Absher with your username and password
2. Go to “My Services”
3. Select “Passports”
4. Click on “Visa Services” or “Query”
5. Look for any alerts or status messages about your iqama
6. If huroob is filed, you will see a message indicating the status

Method 2: Muqeem ( employer’s portal)

Your employer (or potential new employer) can check your status through the Muqeem portal (muqeem.sa). This shows the full iqama details including any huroob flag.

Method 3: Jawazat office

Visit the nearest Jawazat (Passport) office with your iqama and passport. They can check your status directly in the system and tell you if huroob has been filed.

Method 4: MHRSD (Ministry of Labor)

You can also check through the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development portal or visit their office. They maintain the labor records that trigger huroob.

How Huroob gets filed

An employer can file huroob through:

1. Absher Absham (employer portal) — most common method
2. Muqeem platform — for iqama-related actions
3. MHRSD Qiwa platform — for labor contract violations
4. In person at Jawazat — with supporting documents

The employer must provide evidence of absence (attendance records, communication attempts) to justify the huroob filing.

How to remove Huroob status

Option 1: Employer cancels the huroob

The simplest way — if your employer agrees to cancel the huroob report, they can do so through Absher or Muqeem. This usually happens when:

• The misunderstanding is resolved
• You return to work
• You negotiate a mutual agreement

Option 2: Report to MHRSD

If the huroob was filed unfairly (you were present at work, or you had permission to be absent), you can file a complaint with the Ministry of Human Resources. They will investigate and may order the employer to cancel the huroob.

Option 3: Legal action

In extreme cases, you may need to hire a lawyer and file a case in the Labor Court. This is expensive and time-consuming but can be necessary if the employer is acting in bad faith.

Option 4: 60-day grace period (new rule)

Under recent reforms, workers declared huroob may be eligible for a 60-day grace period to regularize their status or transfer to a new employer. Check with Qiwa or Jawazat if this applies to your case.

Can you leave Saudi Arabia with Huroob?

No. If your iqama has huroob status, you cannot leave through normal channels. Airport immigration will stop you.

However, you can:

• Surrender at Jawazat — voluntary surrender may reduce penalties
• Request deportation through the Indian Embassy — in extreme cases, the embassy can facilitate departure
• Wait for the 60-day grace period — if eligible, regularize your status during this window

• Always inform your employer before any extended absence
• Return before your exit re-entry visa expires — even by one day
• Keep communication records — WhatsApp messages, emails, official letters
• Never abandon your job without following proper resignation procedures
