Can Indians Travel to GCC with Saudi National ID? What You Actually Need
A viral tweet says you can travel to GCC with Saudi National ID. But can Indian expats actually use it? Here is the truth — and what you really need for GCC travel.
A recent tweet from @CareAljawazat (Saudi Passports customer service) said: “You can travel with the national ID, provided it has at least 3 months validity when traveling to GCC countries.”
Many Indian expats saw this and wondered: Can I use my Saudi iqama card to travel to UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, or Qatar without my passport?
The short answer: No. Here is why, and what you actually need.
The confusion: National ID vs Iqama
Saudi Arabia has two different identity cards:

The @CareAljawazat tweet was referring to the Saudi National ID — which is only for Saudi citizens. Indian expats do not have this card. You have an iqama, which is a residence permit, not a travel document.
What Indian expats actually need for GCC travel
Mandatory documents
- Valid Indian passport — minimum 3 months validity for GCC countries, 6 months for others
- GCC visa — each GCC country has its own visa requirements for Indian passport holders
- Valid iqama — proves your legal residence in Saudi Arabia
Optional but helpful
- Iqama card copy — useful as secondary ID within Saudi Arabia (not for international travel)
- Return ticket — may be asked at border
- Hotel booking — for some GCC countries
GCC visa requirements for Indian passport holders

Important: Having a valid Saudi iqama does NOT automatically grant you visa-free entry to GCC countries. Each country has its own visa rules for Indian passport holders.
The iqama card as secondary ID
While you cannot use your iqama for international GCC travel, the iqama card is useful as:
- Secondary identification within Saudi Arabia
- Proof of legal residence when dealing with banks, telecom, government services
- Backup ID if your passport is being renewed
The iqama card has your Iqama number, which is linked to your Absher account and all government services.
Can Saudi residents travel to GCC without a passport?
No. All residents — regardless of nationality — need a valid passport to cross international borders. The Saudi digital ID (for citizens) and the iqama (for residents) are not substitutes for a passport at immigration.
The only exception is the GCC Unified Tourist Visa (still being rolled out), which may eventually allow easier travel between GCC countries for residents. But as of July 2026, you still need your passport.
