Passport Renewal via Absher: Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them
Renewing your passport through Absher should be simple — but common mistakes cause delays. Here are the pitfalls expats face and how to avoid them.

Renewing your passport through Absher seems straightforward — login, apply, pay, done. But expats frequently run into the same avoidable pitfalls. Here is what goes wrong and how to fix it.

Pitfall 1: Trying to renew while outside Saudi Arabia
The mistake: Many expats try to renew their passport through Absher while traveling abroad.
The reality: You must be inside Saudi Arabia to renew your passport through Absher. The system requires biometric verification which can only be done at a Jawazat office within the Kingdom.
What to do if you are abroad:
- Contact the Saudi Embassy or Consulate in your current country
- They can process passport renewal through their system
- Bring your iqama, passport, and any supporting documents
Pitfall 2: “No appointments available” error
The mistake: Trying to book a Jawazat appointment during peak hours.
The reality: Jawazat appointments fill up fast, especially in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam.
How to fix:
- Book appointments early in the morning (6-7 AM)
- Try off-peak locations — smaller Jawazat offices in suburbs
- Check for new appointment slots that open periodically
- Use the Tawasul service if you cannot get an appointment
Pitfall 3: Missing documents
The mistake: Showing up at Jawazat without all required documents.
What you need:
- Current passport (original)
- Iqama (original)
- Two passport-size photographs
- Previous passport (if available)
- Any name change documents (if applicable)
Pitfall 4: Outstanding fees blocking renewal
The mistake: Not clearing all government fees before attempting renewal.
Fees that can block renewal:
- Traffic fines (check via Absher or Muroor app)
- Iqama renewal fees (must be current)
- Dependent fees (if applicable)
- Any outstanding government charges
Tip: Clear everything through SNB Neo before your appointment.
Pitfall 5: Expired biometric registration
The mistake: Forgetting that biometrics must be current for passport services.
What to do:
- Check your biometric status on Absher
- If expired, visit a Jawazat office to re-register
- Biometrics are required for all passport and iqama services
Pitfall 6: Not checking passport expiry date
The mistake: Applying for renewal too late.
Rules:
- 3 months validity required for travel to Arab countries
- 6 months validity required for travel to other countries
- Apply at least 2-3 months before expiry to avoid issues
Quick checklist before renewal
- Passport is inside Saudi Arabia (not abroad)
- All fees are cleared (traffic, iqama, dependent)
- Biometric registration is current
- All documents are ready (passport, iqama, photos)
- Appointment is booked (early morning recommended)
- No pending labour complaints or huroob status
