Rulings Related to Performing Eid Qurbani

Who should perform Eid Qurbani or Udhiya?

The Ud’hiyah (sacrifice on ‘Eid Al-Adhā) is an emphasised Sunnah that is legislated for both men and women ― it is accepted from a man for himself and his household. Likewise, it is accepted from a woman for herself and her household.

Is it enough if My Father Offers Qurًbani for me ?

If you are living in a separate household, then the Ud-hiyah offered by your father on behalf of himself and the members of his household is not sufficient for you, because you are not living with them in the same household. It is prescribed for you to offer Ud-hiyah on behalf of yourself and your family.

When is Eid Qurbani or Udhiya Performed?

The udhiya (sacrifice) is to to be performed on the

  • Day of Nahr i.e., first day of Eid or 10th of Dhul-Hijjah (~ 20th July 2021)
  • Days of Tashreeq, i.e. 11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah (~ 21st -23rd July 2021)
Any of these days is allowable for sacrifice. The sacrifice is to be performed every year.

Can I Perform the Eid Qurbani before Eid Prayer?

“The one who slaughtered before the ‘Eid prayer, then his sacrifice is not counted, rather it is merely meat that he had offered to his family.”[1. Bukhāri and Muslim reported from Anas (radiyallāhu ‘anhu)]

The slaughtering cannot be performed before the Eid prayer.

Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) said:

Allah’s Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “All the days of Tashreeq are for slaughtering.”[2. Hasan, see As-Silsilah, no. 2467] The days of Tashreeq are 11th, 12th and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah.[3. Ahmad and Ibn Hibbān reported from Jubayr bin Mut’im]

Withholding from cutting hair and clipping nails

It is not allowed for the one offering the sacrifice to cut any of his/her hair or to clip their nails. The time begins from sunset, the night before the first day of Dhul-Hijjah.

This is due to the saying of the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam):

“When the month of Dhul-Hijjah begins, and one of you intends to make a sacrifice (ud’hiyah), then let him not take anything from the hair of his body, or his nails until he has sacrificed.”[4. Muslim, no. 1977 from Umm Salamah]

What is a Person forgetfully cuts their hair or nails?

If a person forgetfully cuts their hair or nails, then they are not held accountable or sinful, However, if a person deliberately cuts any of the hair of his body, or clips his nails, then he has disobeyed the Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) but it does not invalidate the sacrifice [5. See Majmoo’ Fatāwā Ibn Bāz 18/38 ― with additional comments and proofs from AbuKhadeejah.com]

Look for a Sacrificial Animal

Only Cattles are allowed as a Sacrificial animal[6. See Quran Al-Hajj 22:34]. The cattle are the following animals: Camels, cows, sheep and goats.

The ages of the animal should be following

AnimalAge (Years)
Camel5+
Cow2+
Sheep1+
Goat1+
Sacrificial animal with their age requirement

Any animal less than these ages is not acceptable as a sacrifice except in the case when one finds it difficult to acquire a sheep of 1+ age, then he is permitted to sacrifice a sheep that has reached six months in age.[7. Muslim, no. 1963, Abu Dāwūd, no. 2799, Ibn Mājah, no 3140 and graded saheeh by Al-Albāni]

Price of Sacrificial Animal – Goat or Sheep

A goat or a Sheep with about 15 KGs of Meat could be easily obtained anywhere from SAR 700 – SAR 1100.

In addition to this, Pay some SAR 50 – SAR 100 for Slaughterhouse for cutting and cleaning the meat. But Make sure that You are the one who is slaughtering the animal by Facing the Qiblah and Saying “Bismillaah Allahu Akbar” before slaughtering[8. Refer Talkhees Ahkaam-ul-Udhiyah wadh-Dhakaat of Imaam Muhammad bin Saalih Al-‘Uthaimeen]. You can also delegate any other person to slaughter on behalf of you. One such option is to visit which is Kingdom’s official platform for buying the udhiya ritual.

What to do with the Sacrificial Meat?

After Completing the Slaughtering, It is from the Sunnah that the one who offered the sacrifice

  • To eat from the meat
  • To give some to his relatives, neighbors
  • To give some away as charity for the needy.

Can I Send the Eid Sacrifice (Qurbāni) abroad to the poor?

It is not allowed to send money for Ud’hiyah (‘Eid sacrifice) overseas as a means of feeding meat to the poor, rather it should be carried out locally so you could eat from it and feed others and more importantly attain the nearness of Allah by slaughtering of the cattle.

If one truly wants to help the poor and feed them, send them your money so they can eat, Alhamdulillāh. [9. As’ilah wa Ajwibah Fi Salāt Al-‘Eidayn of Al-‘Allāmah Ibn ‘Uthaimīn]
